Description:
Digital image of Emmaus Monastery on Palackeho Square along the Vltava River Prague Czech Republic. Perennial tram and rail renovation often halts trams and traffic in Prague. Transportation engineers can be seen just in front of the monastery during reconstruction of the rail crossing from Smichov over the Palacky Bridge into the New Town. The bridge was also a frequent walkway for Albert Einstein who lived in Smichov just on the other end of this bridge and crossed to the German University just behind the Emmaus Monastery. The Emmaus monastery was established in 1347 under Charles IV with an invitation to Dalmatian Benedictines to establish a house and seminary in Prague. Its most famous student is Jan Hus who studied in the seminary here. Johannes Kepler lived here while he was in Prague. During communism this church was closed, but is now reopened and re-established under Benedictines. Fragments of Gothic frescoes by Masters Theodoric and Master Mikulas Wurmser decorate the interior of church. They also did the frescoes in Karlstejn. The double steeple was added after bombardment destroyed the earlier tower. Reconstruction was done by Bedrich Hacan and Frantisek Cerny. The building has housed both a Benedictine and Hussite seminary reflecting religious heritage of Czech Republic.
