Description:
Digital image of a spire of the Strahov Church of the Assumption of Our Lady on Petrin Hill in Prague. The church was originally a Romanesque stone basilica built around 1143 under Jindich Zdik, Archbishop of Prague. It suffered damage with the Abbey with the 1420 Hussite Wars. In 1586, Jan Lobelius was elected Abbot of Strahov and began massive renovation of Abbey. The church was rebuilt Baroque and completed under Justin Questenberg when Lobelius became Archbishop of Prague. The Abbey survived the Thirty Years War as it was protected by Hapsburg rule. On 2 May 1627, the relics of St Nobert, founder of the Premonstratensians were translated here under the military protection of Ferdinand II. The Finnish regiment of the Swedish Army occupied the Abbey during Thirty Years War, but the Abbey was quickly restored with new additions and lavish renovations in Baroque. Imitative architecture of an Archbishop's cap recalling St Nobert's office. Architects: M Filippi, G D Orsi, Siard Nosecky, Jean B Mathey, Johann Anton Quintainer
